64 Digits and the Mystery of the Missing Sign

Oh no! The village sign has gone amiss, and despite a lack of evidence, you have been assumed resonsible. Banished from the village, are you able to survive in the wild, overcome a series of random quests, and ultimately prove your innocence?

Originally made for the 64D RPG competition, this has been my first and only attempt at making an RPG. It’s clunky, buggy, unbalanced, and a bit weird.

Tips

  • Start by talking to everyone in the villiage [sic].
  • Use the floppy disk icons to save your progress whenever possible (press Z).
  • The first building on the left is now a “warp house”, which lets you jump ahead to various parts of the story. The warp order is:
    1. forest: Banished from the village.
    2. frenchcon: Boss battle with Frenchcon.
    3. oldworld: Upon discovering the old world.
    4. jakex: Boss battle with JakeX.
    5. rescue1: Rescuing Marbles.
    6. cookie: Giving the cookie.
    7. rescue2: Rescuing Ludabot.
    8. chop: Chopping down the big tree.
    9. slimeboss: Boss battle with Slime Boss.
    10. rocket: Rocket launch.

Changelog

v1.0 (2007-06-03)

Original release. No ability to save or load progress. You die, you restart from the very beginning!

v1.1 (2026-05-30)

Some significant quality of life improvements. Game is now (somewhat) playable.

  • Feature: Add checkpoints (floppy icons) with ability to save and load progress.
  • Feature: Convert vacant house into warp zone to enable skipping to various parts of the story.
  • Improvement: Update slime movement so that they pause briefly upon being hit.
  • Improvement: The sign before the jump to hogofwar now reminds you to use shift to run.
  • Improvement: Adjusted forest platforms to block routes that appeared passable but are actually impassable.
  • Bugfix: Previously there was no visual change when you got the axe. Now, when you get the axe, your stick changes to an axe.

Trivia

  • If you place a file called you.gif in the same directory as the game, this will be used as your avatar during dialogue scenes.
  • All characters in the game were friends I knew online at the time.
  • Most (all?) of the music was made by people in the game.
  • The grass tileset is copied from Dominos.
  • The JakeX laser noise was copied from Sapphire Tears, a game by JakeX.
  • The dialogue and code is full of genuine spelling mistakes, which have been left untouched for posterity.
